Fritz the Cat is based on a comic strip series. It was originally created by cartoonist and creative designer Robert Crumb. When it comes to the storyline, the cartoon shows how a hypothetical cat raises hell. It relates to the cat’s college days while he sins along the way.

When it was first released, Fritz the Cat was called as highly conversational. And we can totally relate as to why. Others went as far as stating it as the ‘most outrageous film ever. Now that’s definitely some unique honor. However, we’re not quite sure if it sounds too positive.

The controversial movie director, Ralph Bakshi, said the following according to Animation World:

I believe in what I am drawing. What adult animation means to me is not tits and ass, but the right to animate any subject or idea you have and let the ratings fall where they may. All I wanted to do was animate the things I thought about and not the dolls they thought about.

[…] When I first got to Hollywood to do the production of Fritz the Cat in 1970, I was greeted by a full-page ad in Variety from about 50 well known Hollywood animators who told me I was destroying the Disney image and should go home.
