Bharat Kalicharan, also known as Akku Yadav, was an Indian gangster, robber, home invader, kidnapper, serial rapist, extortionist, and serial killer. Yadav grew up in the Kasturba Nagar slum, which is outside the Indian central city of Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Yadav lived and did business in the slum which housed several criminals and two rival gangs.

Akku Yadav targeted women and girls as young as 12 in his impoverished neighborhood of Kasturba Nagar and murdered at least three of his victims, dumping their corpses on railway tracks whilst raping many more over 13 years.

His crimes were reported to the authorities but he always got away because he bribed the police with money and drinks.

One woman reported to the police that she was gang-raped by Yadav’s friends and the police reacted by gang-raping her themselves. Yadav could do whatever he wanted and would not be punished as long as he targeted only the poor.

There were reports that the gangster’s main source of income came from barging into houses and frightening people for money, using sexual abuse as a weapon of fear.

According to The Guardian, whenever Yadav gets arrested, he will soon be granted bail, with police allowing him to continue terrorizing the community.

“Although being a rape victim is taboo in India, many of Yadav’s victims reported his crimes,” Buick explained. “Instead of arresting him, however, women were turned away by the police being told ‘you’re a loose woman, that’s why he raped you.”

“One woman told the police she was gang-raped and the police responded by gang-raping her themselves,” she continued. “As long as Yadav targeted the poor, the police wouldn’t interfere.”

The turning point came when Yadav and his gang went after a woman named Usha Narayane, who threatened to blow up her house if he did not leave. This incident urged other women in the slum area to unite together and burn down his own home, forcing him to go to the police and ask them to arrest him for his own protection.

On August 13, 2004, these fired-up women flocked to the courthouse where he was being held and brought vegetable knives, stones, and chili powder to seek their revenge.

The enraged women took turns in stabbing him until he was lifeless. One woman apparently cut off his genitals, but this has not been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Usha was arrested and charged with his death, but every woman from the slum claimed responsibility for Yadav’s death and she was eventually acquitted in 2012.

A number of other women were also arrested but none of them were ever found guilty due to a lack of evidence.
