In California, a transgender woman sued San Diego County and its sheriff’s department after allegedly forcing her to share a jail cell with three men last year.
According to the lawsuit which was filed on Tuesday, Kristina Frost was viciously assaulted by one of the inmates while she was asleep.
On November 25, 2020, Frost first arrived at San Diego Central Jail and was initially placed in a holding cell alone, Insider reported.
However, the lawsuit stated that deputies moved Frost to a “minimally monitored” cell with three other men.
This move was against Frost’s wishes, the lawsuit said. In addition, it was stated that she was confused as to why she was being transferred given that her records and driver’s license both said that she was a woman.
At the time, Frost had been wearing “feminine” clothes. A high-cut shorts and a bra, the lawsuit reads.
Moreover, Frost also said that the deputies repeatedly misgendered her both in person and on official reports.
Insider reported that Frost was “viciously” assaulted by one of the men in the cell after she had fallen asleep on the night of November 25.
It was revealed that Frost received “closed-fist punches” to the face, which resulted in a broken jaw.
The attack required Frost two surgeries for her broken jaw and is now required to wear dentures, the lawsuit said.
Frost also added that some deputies witnessed the attack and that none of them “immediately intervened” and that the attacker was “eventually” removed from the cell.
Frost said in the filing that she had to wait up to 12 hours for medical attention, despite being unable to eat or drink water because of the injuries.
Now, Frost is suing the San Diego County and its sheriff’s department for penal and compensatory damages and is seeking for her attorney fees to be covered.
At the time of this writing, the San Diego County and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately respond for comment.
