A Mother Was Accidentally Shot & Killed By Her Own Toddler During Zoom Call


A toddler has shot and killed her mother after getting a hold of an unsecured, loaded handgun inside their apartment.

Shamaya Lynn, 21, from the US state of Florida was on a work-related Zoom call when another member in the call noticed it appeared she needed help.

Lynn’s co-worker said they saw the toddler behind her and then heard a noise, Altamonte Springs Police Department said in a statement.

One of the participants of the woman’s Zoom call dialed 911 after hearing a noise and then seeing the coworker fall backward, according to a news release.

“I don’t know where to begin, but I’m on a live with a company, we just got hired,” the coworker said in a 911 call,. “And one of the girls just passed out. She’s bleeding.”

The woman told the dispatcher she could hear a baby crying but couldn’t see anything else.

“We heard a loud “kaboom” and then she leaned back,” the caller said. “And then we just got blood from her face”.

A man who identified himself as Shamaya’s boyfriend also called 911 after coming home and finding her unconscious and bleeding.

“Hurry!” the man told the dispatcher. “There’s blood everywhere.”

Altamonte Springs police responded to the apartment on Spanish Trace Drive Wednesday around 11 a.m.

According to authorities, officers and paramedics tried to render aid to Lynn when they arrived on the scene, but ultimately she could not be saved after suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Police confirmed that the woman was the mother of the toddler and another child who was at the home of the incident.

Altamonte Springs Police said investigators determined the toddler found the loaded gun which was left unsecured in the apartment by an adult.

WKMG-TV reported that the firearm which was used in the fatal shooting belonged to the children’s father.

The police report stated that the father of the two children was handcuffed at the scene due to his “state and guns being present in the apartment.”

“The investigation is ongoing and detectives are working closely with the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office concerning any charges which may be appropriate for the owner of the firearm,” Altamonte Springs Police said in a statement.

Sergeant Robert Ruiz Jr. of the Altamonte Springs Police Department told reporters that “this young mother lost her life after one of her toddlers found an unsecured handgun in the apartment.”

“We do have a responsibility as adults to keep people safe, especially when you own a firearm,” Ruiz said. “If you own a firearm, please keep it locked and secured. Incidents like this could be avoided.”

An investigation is ongoing, and detectives are trying to determine if any charges should be filed against the children’s father, who owns the gun. The father was questioned but not arrested.

Both of Shamaya’s children, including the one who fired the handgun, were not hurt in the incident and are currently in the care of relatives.
