Simone Biles is speaking out about the personal family tragedy she had to witness while competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The famous athlete got emotional during a recent press conference. And that’s when she spoke about how she had to face her aunt’s death which took place during the competition. Simone turned heads after she opted to withdraw from some of the Tokyo Olympics final events, citing her mental health concerns.
However, the young star did manage to stun audiences across the board when she revealed how she would compete in the women’s individual balance beam event. And that is where she managed to pull off a stellar performance, securing a bronze medal for Team USA.
Speaking to press reporters, Biles revealed how the entire event has been such a mentally exhausting affair.
“I really tried hard to put my best foot forward so that I could perform on the global stage,” she revealed. Moreover, after winning bronze on Tuesday, the gymnast felt the need to comment on some important things to the public. Hence, for this reason, she shed light on how so many people watching from the home judge and critique Olympians.
But little do they know about what these stars actually go through.
“Two weeks back, I suddenly woke up and that’s when I found out that my aunt had suddenly died. And the fact that I was at the Olympics made things so much more difficult,” she revealed.
Clearly, Biles’ aunt’s death was put above the other mental issues that she was trying to break free from, and that just put a lot of added stress and pressure on her during the performance. Simone Biles withdrew from her team’s all-around final, after which she became the center of attention of plenty of critics.
While some applauded her decision to put health first, others felt it was important for her to shun all her problems and represent her team as she was an olympian.
