Quentin Tarantino’s mother has reacted to his remarks about not supporting her financially after making a vow as a child.
Quentin Jerome Tarantino, 58, is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, author, film critic, and actor. Quentin’s films have garnered critical and commercial success.
He has received many industry awards, including two Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and the Palme d’Or, and has been nominated for an Emmy and five Grammys.
The award-winning director is worth an estimated $120 million, but he recently revealed that he once pledged to not support his mom after she was not supportive of his ambitions during his childhood.
Speaking with Brian Koppelman on an episode of The Moment podcast, Quentin said his teachers viewed this “as a defiant act of rebellion”.
Quentin spoke particularly about a moment when his mother scolded him because he was doing writing instead of schoolwork.
He recalled some academic trouble that he found himself at school and say that his mother “was bi*****g at me about (writing screenplays)”
“And then in the middle of her little tirade, she said, “Oh, and by the way, this little writing career” – with the finger quotes and everything – “this little writing career” that you’re doing? That s*** is f****ng over,’” he said.
The director then clarified his mother meant she didn’t want him writing in class when he was “supposed to be doing something else.”
“And when she said that to me in that sarcastic way, I was in my head, and I go, “OK, lady. When I become a successful writer, you will never see penny one from my success,” he said.
“There will be no house for you,” he added. “There’s no vacation for you, no Elvis Cadillac for mommy. You get nothing. Because you said that.”
Connie Zastoupil, Quentin’s mother, has responded to his words.
She told USA Today quoted her as saying that her son has her “love” and “support” no matter what.
“Regarding my son Quentin – I support him, I’m proud of him and love him and his growing new family,” Connie said. “It gave me great joy to dance at his wedding and receive his news upon the birth of my Grandson Leo.”
The mom added that comments made on podcasts tend to “spin and go viral without full context,” and she doesn’t “wish to participate in this salacious transactional media frenzy.”
Brian Koppelman attempted to persuade the renowned director to reconsider because his mother’s comment “drove him” to his success and to prove her wrong.
To which Quentin responded: “There are consequences for your words as you deal with your children. Remember there are consequences for your sarcastic tone about what’s meaningful to them.”
Quentin added it’s important parents understand their comments can have a significant impact on their kids.
When he was asked if he “stuck” to his pledge, Quentin said: “Yeah. I helped her out with a jam with the IRS. But no house. No Cadillac, no house.”
In her response, Connie didn’t seem concerned in correcting the record or contradicting anything her son said, but she did imply his comments do not provide the full context.
Over the years, the acclaimed filmmaker has been open about his lack of a father figure growing up, due to his estranged father, the aspiring actor Tony Tarantino, leaving at a young age.
Based on his recent comments through the media, Quentin Tarantino doesn’t seem to have the most pleasant relationship with his mother either.
