A woman who transitioned to a man after just two hours of counseling has spoken out and opened up about her regret.
26-year-old Sam from Midlands, UK, is urging people against hasty transitioning after making the decision to get a mastectomy and start hormone treatment after almost no counseling.
Two years after she began the transition to a male, Sam began suffering from vaginal atrophy and realized that she didn’t really want to be a male.
Amid health complications, Sam decided she wanted to cancel her full gender reassignment surgery plans and begin the transition back to a woman.
“I am now reconnecting with my natural body in the form it is in now and my life is about moving along. I have the permanent effects of my journey but they don’t invalidate me as a woman,” Sam admitted.
“I do still feel regret towards medical steps I took during my transition but I am working on loving and accepting my body for how it is rather than how used to be and how I wish it was.”
The 26-year-old also suggested counseling should be present at all stages of transitioning to help individuals avoid making wrong choices that could impact them for their entire lives.
“I also think more information should be given to individuals to make sure that their informed consent is truly informed,” she added.
“I saw a community full of so many people who had transitioned and it had finally made them happy; and with hindsight, I looked at them and thought that would be what made me happy too.”
Concluding her confession, Sam said she failed to “realize that I don’t have to fit into a box of one of society’s defined gender norms” and that she now knows for sure she’s not a trans man.
“The industry is under huge pressure from the trans community to move things along quickly because of statistics around suicide. This frightened me into feeling I had to do everything as quickly as possible to avoid feeling that way,” she says.
