26-year-old Mariah Smith from Massachusetts lost her husband, Chris, when he was just 27 years old after the young man succumbed to cancer.

Two years after her special one’s passing, Mariah realized the couple’s dream of having their own family by using Chris’s frozen sperm to conceive their child.

“Before he passed, I promised him I’d chase our dream of having kids. This spring, just over two years after Chris’ death, our daughter will be born,” the young lady revealed in her piece for Insider.

In her tear-jerking essay, the mom-to-be also explained that her late husband refused to start chemotherapy for his cancer until he had preserved his sperm so that the couple could have children of their own in the future even if he didn’t survive.

“We wanted to know we could have the family we dreamed of. It was a must for us to share a family,” Mariah added.

“Becoming a widow at 24 was just as awful as it sounds. But I had something to hang on to: the promise of having Chris’ child. It kept me going, taking care of myself and working toward the future. It breathed life into my heart and soul.

“I knew I still had that piece of him. I had the option to have our own family, even though it’d look very different than I’d anticipated. I could keep him alive in this way for our family and friends.”

While getting pregnant was far from easy, Mariah finally received the good news after three rounds of IVF, one round of IUI, and, unfortunately, a miscarriage.

“I’ve been preparing myself for meeting my daughter my whole pregnancy. It will be a moment of immense joy and sadness,” she concluded as she admitted that mixed feelings of both sadness and joy are in the play.

“Knowing that Chris won’t be there to hold her and meet her with me will bring a new kind of grief. I’ve been through a lot and still have a great challenge ahead: doing my absolute best to make sure my children know Chris, without ever being able to know him.”
