A 39-year-old woman who threw a bowl of chicken burrito at a Chipotle worker after she got her order wrong has been ordered to work two months in a fast food restaurant.
It was on September 5 when Rosemary Hayne was caught hurling a burrito bowl in the face of Emily Russell, 26, in the fast food restaurant in Parma, Ohio.
Hayne pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and was sentenced to 180 days behind bars but Parma Municipal Court Judge Timothy Gilligan gave her another option.
The mother-of-four decided to spend 30 days in prison and work 60 days at a restaurant, FOX8 News reported.
During the sentencing, the judge asked Hayne if she would like to ‘walk in (Russell’s) shoes for two months and learn how people should treat people, or do you want to do your jail time?”
The 39-year-old replied: “I’d like to walk in her shoes.”
Haynes is now required to work at least 20 hours a week at any fast food restaurant.
The woman’s attorney, Joe O’Malley, told CBS News: “Truly regrets her actions and the pain that it caused.”
He also said in an email: “My client is grateful for the opportunity to get a job to reduce her sentence and demonstrate her true remorse for her behavior at Chipotle.”
Russell, who had worked at Chipotle for over four years, told CBS MoneyWatch that she was ‘relieved’ that the customer would have a glimpse of her life by working at a fast food restaurant.
“I’ve been saying she’s lucky she’s working 20 hours a week – I was working 65 hours a week,” she added.
Russell also said that even though Hayne apologized to her, she did not believe it was genuine.
“She said she had a bad day, but that’s not the way you react when you have a bad day – to throw food in someone’s face,” she said.
