A baby pink coffin for a 5-year-old girl who tragically passed away after contracting Strep A bacterial infection was driven in a horse-drawn carriage.
Mourners wore rainbow-colored ties and released balloons into the sky as they said their final goodbye to Stella-Lily McCorkindale.
Floral tributes and teddy bears were left outside her grieving grandmother’s home ahead of the funeral.
Hundreds of people lined the streets as Stella-Lily’s coffin, decorated with stars and rainbows, was taken outside after the funeral gathering.
Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off was played in the background before balloons were released into the sky.
The small pink coffin was placed into a horse-drawn carriage and driven to nearby Shankill Road.
In a statement, the school said: “Stella-Lily was a very bright and talented little girl, and very popular with both staff and children, and will be greatly missed by everyone at school.”
Stella-Lily’s grieving father, Robert, previously shared how he took his daughter to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children multiple times before she was admitted to an intensive care unit.
“They should have tested her for Strep A on Monday (November 28), by the time they induced her Stella had given up,” he told The Mirror.
“I think she would have had extra days of fighting.”
Mr. McCorkindale also recalled how he carried his daughter into the hospital on the first day but was simply advised to give her Lucozade to prevent dehydration.
The next day, he took Stella-Lily back to the hospital but she was sent home again.
On November 30, they rushed her back to the hospital after she said “Mummy, I feel like I’m dying.”
That’s when doctors found out that she had a chest infection. A blood test later confirmed that she had Strep A.
Stella-Lily died on December 5.
She is one of the 16 children who died from Strep A this year in the UK.
