Esra Haynes from Melbourne, Australia, tried the trend, which involves inhaling chemicals in aerosol cans for a temporary high.

Esra’s parents, Andrea and Paul, were left devastated after the sudden passing of their daughter.

“It was just the regular routine of going to hang out with her mates,” the mother told Australian TV program A Current Affair.

“We always knew where she was and we knew who she was with. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary,” the father said.

“To get this phone call at that time of night, [it] was one of the calls no parent ever wants to have to receive and we unfortunately got that call: ‘Come and get your daughter.’ We’ve got the pictures in our mind which will never be erased, you know, of what we were confronted with.”

According to American Addiction Centers, chroming – which is the term given to the inhalation of toxic substances recreationally – is most popular among Gen Z, and also groups of people who can’t afford other substances.

Stars like Jackass’ Steve-O have opened up about trying the trend, with the 48-year-old saying in a 2021 interview with The Times that he had once been hooked and was concerned about its prevalence online.
