A paramedic has been caught on camera stealing from a 94-year-old woman only moments after she died.
According to the Mirror, Mark Titley was called to Barbara Drage’s home after reports that she had collapsed.
Emergency services rushed to the property and administered CPR and advanced life support but she was declared dead.
Titley, one of the paramedics, re-entered the home after the elderly woman was pronounced dead to look for a do not resuscitate form.
But a camera caught the paramedic going through the woman’s belongings and he started counting notes from a cash box before he put them in his pocket.
When he noticed the camera, he then put the money back where he found it.
After watching the footage, Barbara’s son said he was ‘disgusted and sick to my stomach.’ He also reported the incident to West Mercia Police and the case went to court.
But the paramedic was no longer working for the West Midlands Ambulance Service as he retired only days after Barbara passed away.
He first denied the allegations and explained that he was only securing the cash so he could give it to the woman’s family but he later admitted to the theft.
Titley was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison which was suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a $232 victim surcharge, and $657 in costs, alongside carrying out 120 hours of unpaid work.
Nathan Hudson, the assistant chief ambulance officer, said, as per the Mirror: “Our staff will be horrified one of their former colleagues would do something like this.
“We hold a position of trust when we enter someone’s home and these sorts of actions rightly put a stain on all of our reputations which is deeply regrettable and makes it much harder for staff who are still working. We are pleased that this was taken to court and dealt with by the criminal justice system.”
