A 38-year-old mother from South Carolina woke up from a coma only to discover that she had lost both her arms after a dog attack.
Now, she faces the possibility of another amputation.
Kyleen Waltman was attacked by three pit bulls while on her way to her mother’s home. She has lost both her arms and has undergone ten surgeries.
When Waltman woke up from her coma, she was so devastated that she had to be sedated again.
And now, the mother-of-three faces losing one of her legs.
Her sister, Amy Waynne, wrote on GoFundMe: “They skin grafted the right leg, but the left leg is still up for amputation if it doesn’t start to heal.”
In Waltman’s most recent battle, doctors have performed a tracheostomy on her. The procedure involves having a hole cut in her neck and a tube inserted into her lungs to help her breathe. A shunt was also put in her left lung to help with the fluid.
Amy said that her sister is eligible for a prosthetic for her right shoulder but her left side was “cut off too much” for one.
“So here we are trying to figure out how to keep her from thinking negative thoughts about her life. I understand that for 38 years she’s had arms and now she doesn’t, how she’s thinking. She’s still fighting. Prayers are working and slowly she is healing,” she said.
Waltman’s best friend, Tanya Gilmer, told WGN Radio that the dog attack came as she was walking to her mother’s home.
“As far as I know, the dogs just jumped on her and you can actually see in the road if you go down there, where she fought the dog, trying to fight them off,” she said.
Abbeville County Animal Control seized the dogs before being put down and sent away for testing.
