According to the New York Post, students at Heyer Elementary in Waukesha, Wisconsin were about to sing ‘Rainbowland’ – a 2017 song of Parton and Cyrus – but school district administrators immediately banned the song before the concert.

The concert’s setlist also included Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog and Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World but both ‘Rainbowland’ and ‘Rainbow Connection’ were banned from the selection after the school district deemed the songs to be controversial.

In a Twitter post, teacher Maestra Melissa said that her students were excited to perform Rainbowland for their concert but it has been canceled by the administration.

“My first graders were so excited to sing ‘Rainbowland’ for our spring concert, but it has been vetoed by our administration. When will it end?” she wrote.

She also shared the lyrics of the song, which read: “Living in a Rainbowland / The skies are blue and things are grand / Wouldn’t it be nice to live in paradise / Where we’re free to be exactly who we are.

“Let’s all dig down deep inside / Brush the judgment and fear aside / Make wrong things right / And end the fight / ‘Cause I promise ain’t nobody gonna win (come on).”

Parents were shocked with the revelation and flooded the comments section.

Sarah Schindler, a mother of a first-grader, told Los Angeles Time that the school board had a ‘conservative flip’ after covid.

“With that have come some policy changes that have been causing some controversy in our community,” she said, referencing rules that prohibit teachers from wearing rainbows, talking about pronouns with students, and having ‘any kind of political signage.’

Another mother named Leigh Radichel Tracy told the publication that the banning of the song “has not in any way come as a surprise” because the school district “has really cracked down on anything LGBTQ.”
