A 22-year-old care home worker took her own life after washing the dead bodies of residents as part of her job.

Taylor Watterson worked in two care homes – Shalom Care Home and Fullarton Care Home. It is claimed that washing the corpses of dead residents severely affected her mental health.

She’d decided to quit her job but the trauma made her distance herself from her friends and family before she ended her life.

Taylor’s grieving parents Lana and Andi McCleave feel that their daughter struggled with the deaths of care home residents and could not unsee some of the things she had witnessed.

“Her job had a lot to do with her mental health,” mom Lana told the Daily Record. “One day she asked if I knew how many dead bodies she’d washed. She’d lost count. I couldn’t believe it when she said it.”

Their young daughter had to do her job regularly and “seeing residents she was close to regularly passing away was hard for her to take.”

Andi also said that Taylor could not dissociate from it.

“She told me it was or two people a week that she was looking after that she was losing,” he said. “What sort of effect did that have on the mental health of the carers?

“They had looked after these people and built up rapports with them then they were just gone.

“To have a young girl sitting there telling you this was heartbreaking.”

Even though Taylor sought her GP’s help and she was taking medication for her mental health, she could not recover from the trauma.

Since their daughter’s death, Lana and Andi have started fundraising to give more support for families who are also grieving.

“Helping others is what’s keeping us going,” they said. “We don’t want other people in this position.”
