28-year-old Sara Seeley from Portland, Oregon, was having the time of her life during her wedding to Mitch on October 22.

Just a day after the ceremony, the couple departed for their honeymoon in Hawaii only for the young lady to suffer a major heart attack while driving to the airport.

According to the reports, Sara’s mother-in-law, who was doing the driving, immediately pulled over after seeing her daughter-in-law’s emergency. That’s when husband Mitch stepped up and gave his wife life-saving CPR.

After her near-death experience, Sara was rushed to the hospital where she remained for weeks while undergoing various tests.

Doctors have since found out that the 28-year-old’s heart attack was a result of juvenile hemochromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that causes the accumulation of iron in organs of the body.

“There have been less than 200 diagnosed cases ever. It’s a recessive condition, which means both our mom and her dad are carriers and it’s just very rare for that to come together and happen and she just happened to get both of the bad alleles,” Sara’s sister, Jane Madden, told KOIN 6.

The family also revealed that the newlywed is currently undergoing physical therapy to recover from temporary paralysis.

“The costs associated with Sara’s treatment have placed an immense burden on her and her family. The dream of a blissful start to married life has been eclipsed by overwhelming medical bills,” Madden added as the family launched a fundraiser to help Mitch and Sara with the medical expenses.

“Sara did not have the benefit of health insurance to cover the substantial medical expenses until Mitch was able to secure her benefits under his plan. Unfortunately, this has resulted in astronomical medical bills that are continuing to accumulate, surpassing what our family can manage.”
