Actor Ashton Kutcher has revealed how he almost died and was left unable to see, walk or hear after suffering from a rare autoimmune disorder.
Speaking about his condition on Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge, the actor shared how the disorder upended his life.
In the video shared by Access Hollywood, the 44-year-old star said: “Like two years ago, I had this weird, super rare form of vasculitis, that like knocked out my vision, it knocked out my hearing, it knocked out like all my equilibrium.”
Vasculitis involves inflammation of the blood vessels, according to Mayo Clinic. The blood vessels thicken because of the inflammation, reducing the width of the passageway through the vessel.
Restricted blood flow can lead to tissue and organ damage.
“It took me like a year to build it all back up,” Kutcher revealed.
The actor said that his experience with the condition gave him a newfound appreciation for his senses and health.
“You don’t really appreciate it, until it’s gone,” the father-of-two said, adding: “Until you go, ‘I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to see again, I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to hear again, I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to walk again.’”
The actor also said that he is “lucky to be alive.”
The actor did not mention when exactly his medical problems started but he maintained a low profile during the pandemic.
Kutcher also said that he views challenges as opportunities for growth. “The minute you start seeing your obstacles as things that are made for you, to give you what you need, then life starts to get fun, right?
“You start surfing on top of your problems instead of living underneath them.”
