A young woman died after jumping out of a moving taxi over an argument with the driver.
The shocking incident took place in Barranquilla, Colombia, where Maria del Carmen Cardenas Matanza got into a quarrel with her taxi driver thinking the man was overcharging her for the ride.
Amid a heated exchange of words, the woman, who was said to be in her 30s, opened the car’s door and jumped out of the moving vehicle.
After the July 26 incident, the same taxi driver rushed Maria to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries 11 days later.
Local reports have since claimed that Maria complained to the driver about the fare and that the man threatened to take her back to where she first got into the cab if she didn’t pay.
At that point, the passenger opened the door and jumped out while the vehicle was still moving, suffering severe head injuries in the process.
“He picked her up at Carrera 51B with Calle 82, in the Torcoroma building. The taxi driver says that he charges 17,000 ($4) for the ride, the passenger says that she is not going to pay that, the taxi driver says that he is going to return her where he picked her up, the passenger opens the rear door and jumps out of the vehicle,” a spokesperson for the police said.
As of this writing, the deadly incident remains under investigation. It is not clear if the driver of the taxi will face any charges over the woman’s death.
