A young woman died at a Tennessee park after lifting the safety bar while on a chairlift and leaping forty feet to her death.
The shocking case takes place in the Anakeesta theme park in Gatlinburg where people were enjoying the views from the chairlift on Thursday evening when a young lady – who is believed to be in her early 20s – plunged to her death on purpose.
While the police have yet to determine the official cause of death, several witnesses confirmed that the girl took her life on purpose.
Speaking of the horrific experience, Andrew Berta, who was visiting the park with his family, recalled the woman lifting the protective bar and leaping to her death.
“My family and I were next in line for the gondola when this happened. We talked with the cop after he came up the mountain literally crying. It was a suicide,” Berta said.
He later added: “A family who we talked to and a staff member who saw it said the girl put her rail up at the highest part of the ride. They then started yelling at her to put her guard rail back down. A few seconds later she jumped.”
Berta also blasted the park’s staff saying they were “disrespectful” and “unempathetic” both during and after the girl’s death.
“To make matters worse, they closed both the gondola and the shuttles for hours which meant there were hundreds of families in the rain waiting,” he continued.
“For some reason they decided to use shuttle vans to bring people down which meant only 16 people could leave the park at a time. What made the crowd of families even more angry was a lot of the staff passed the line and left in the first van.”
As of this writing, the heartbreaking incident remains under investigation.
While Anakeesta has not yet commented on the situation, they said in a statement that “our hearts are with the family of the deceased.”
