The family of a man who decapitated his pregnant girlfriend insisted that he is not a monster and that ‘extreme paranoia’ caused him to kill the victim.
Liese Dodd from Illinois was eight months pregnant when she was killed by 22-year-old Deundrea Holloway last week.
Her head was discovered in a dumpster just outside her apartment building.
The family of Deundrea, who has mental illness, said that they do not believe he was the father of Liese’s unborn baby.
Last week, his stepfather Chris Hawk posted a YouTube video and said that the family was ‘ashamed’ of what happened but insisted Deundrea was not a ‘monster.’
“I’m not going to deny that what happened was an extreme act of evil… We are ashamed. His mom, his sister. We’re all shocked,” he said.
Hawk continued: “We knew he was capable of violence but we never saw this. We tried to get help for him, for at least three years.
“As far as longer term mental care, we were always told that they can’t hold him unless he’s done something.
“Now he’s being held because he’s done something.”
The stepfather also claimed that the system fails individuals with mental health problems. “People are left out on their own,” he said. “It’s a tragic situation.”
In a previous interview with The Sun, Hawk said that Deundrea’s mother Carla had pleaded with him to break up with his girlfriend.
“Carla was kind of saying ‘you guys need to split up.’ It was a very toxic thing,” he added.
The victim’s severed head was found in a dumpster outside her Illinois apartment in a murder authorities have described as ‘abominable.’
Her grieving mother, Heidi Noel, said that they were planning to throw a baby shower and were already gathering gifts for the baby’s arrival in July.
But now, they are planning a funeral for her daughter and granddaughter.
Deundrea has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of intentional homicide to an unborn child, concealment of a homicide death, dismembering a human body, and offenses relating to motor vehicles.
