Whoopi Goldberg was filmed breaking into tears during an emotional tribute to Matthew Perry.
The 54-year-old actor and Friends star sparked mourning around the globe after passing away suddenly last Saturday.
Thousands of celebrities, co-stars, and fans of all ages have since broken their silence and remembered the actor not only for his humorous performances but also for his dedication to helping people struggling with addiction.
Recalling Perry’s dying wish to be remembered for trying to help as many people as possible was Whoopi Goldberg who fought back tears during The View episode on Monday.
“He was just 54 years old and we were very lucky to have him here last year when he was really open about overcoming his struggles with addiction, and he was really passionate about helping other people get through it,” she said after admitting everyone was left “heartbroken” by the news.
The show then played an emotional 2022 clip in which Matthew is seen opening up about his desire to help people.
“You have to have professionals in the business, you can’t just be with a group of people who don’t know anything about this, because as much as I wanted to quit that day when Jenny [Jennifer Aniston] came up to me and said ‘we know,’ I couldn’t it just wasn’t an option,” Perry said.
“But if you raise your hand to the right people, you get the right help, and you don’t be alone with it, you have a chance out of it – and that’s what I did.”
Perry further opened up about his goals in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.
“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life. I’m still working through it personally, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic or drug addict comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me?’ I will always say, ‘Yes, I know how to do that. I will do that for you, even if I can’t always do it for myself.’ So I do that, whenever I can. In groups, or one on one,” he wrote.
“And I created the Perry House in Malibu, a sober-living facility for men. I also wrote my play The End of Longing, which is a personal message to the world, an exaggerated form of me as a drunk. I had something important to say to people like me, and to people who love people like me.”
Perry went on to say he wanted his role on Friends to be “listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people” while admitting he realized that likely wouldn’t happen.
