A young Ukrainian refugee escaped her war-ridden country only to be deliberately killed by a teen driver.

5-year-old Taia escaped Ukraine together with her mom, Luda, after Putin launched a full-scale attack on the country. Following their escape, Taia’s family arrived and settled in the Italian city of Crotone.

Just a month after arriving in Italy, however, the young girl was killed by an 18-year-old driver.

According to the reports, the teenager crashed into Taia, Taia’s teenage cousin, and the cousin’s 16-year-old boyfriend who was carrying the young girl while the trio was walking around.

While the case remains under investigation, it is believed that the teenage boy might have deliberately targeted the 16-year-old and his girlfriend due to the fact that he drove past them and then made a U-turn only to crash into the trio.

During the incident, Taia fell from the 16-year-old boy’s arms and banged her head on the ground. She succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced dead.

The 16-year-old suffered several fractures and a cranial injury but is expected to make a recovery. The boy’s 16-year-old girlfriend allegedly didn’t suffer any injuries.

Following the horrific act, the driver’s father, who was reportedly in the passenger’s seat the entire time, attempted to take the blame for what had happened.

The investigators, however, soon realized that the incident wasn’t an accident due to circumstances such as lack of braking on the road and holes in the perpetrators’ story.

The police have since arrested the 18-year-old driver who has been charged with aggravated road homicide.
