Russian authorities believe that Ukraine is the one responsible for the shelling of Zhuravlyovka and Niekhoteyevka.
The Ukrainian military has started fighting on Russian soil, which is a new development in what has largely been a defensive struggle for the country.
According to the reports from multiple Russian media outlets, authorities in Russia were forced to place two villages under emergency order and evacuate some citizens after the Ukrainian Shelling of both areas.
Ria Novosti, a Russian government-controlled publication, reported that the source of the explosion was an attack that originated in Ukraine. The said explosion near the village of Zhuravlyovka injured four people.
Kremlin-friendly publication Interfax reported that Zhuaravlyovka and Niekhoteyevka were placed under emergency orders where 180 people got evacuated to the city of Belgorod as the result of an explosion at the ammunition depot.
The only difference between the two was Interfax didn’t blame the said explosion on Ukraine, but it did note that the authorities believe it was not an accident.
Fox News cannot independently verify the reported attack, though reports of the attack, an apparent setback for Russia, and Ukraine’s involvement originated from Russia’s state-run outlet.
The reports came hot as the Russian military has begun the redeployment of their forces encircling Kyiv. John Kirby, Pentagon press secretary, said that the movements were more of a repositioning retreat of Russian force.
Kirby said that the Russian military has failed to take Kyiv and most Ukrainian population centers, something he said was a Russian military objective since the onset of the invasion.
The said report of Ukraine attacking Russian soil just come out after the backdrop of a peace talk between the two countries in Turkey, with Russia claiming their commitment to attacking Ukraine as Ukraine pushed for a settlement to the war that would include military neutrality in exchange for full membership in the European Union.
Rebekah Koffler, former DIA intelligence officer, said on Fox News Digital that Ukrainian demands are likely a non-starter for Russia. Some experts also remain skeptical about the peace negotiations.
Koffler said: “Regretfully, this negotiation is another tactic by Putin to buy time to regroup and cause confusion among European and U.S. leaders and, most importantly, our intelligence services.”
