A veteran Ukrainian photographer who has been documenting the war was shot dead by Russian soldiers near Kyiv.

40-year-old Maksym ‘Maks’ Levin was a husband, a father-of-four, and a dedicated photojournalist who had been working with Reuters by supplying photos from the war-torn country since 2013.

As Ukraine’s officials revealed on Saturday, Levin was found dead on the outskirts of Kyiv weeks after he had gone missing.

According to the reports, the photographer’s body was found in the village of Huta-Mezhyhirska after he was shot twice by Russian soldiers.

“Ukrainian photographer Max Levin found dead near Kyiv where he has been documenting Russian war crimes,” Defence of Ukraine announced on Twitter.

“According to investigators, Max who was unarmed was killed by Russian soldiers with two shots from firearms. He is survived by his wife and four children.”

Following the tragic news, Levin’s colleagues from Reuters paid the 40-year-old a tribute saying everyone is “saddened to hear of his death.”

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Maksim Levin, a long-time contributor to Reuters, in Ukraine,” Reuters’ Global Head of Video and Pictures John Pullman said.

“Maks has provided compelling photos and videos from Ukraine to Reuters since 2013.

The news of Levin’s death comes as Russian forces began retreating from Kyiv and surrounding regions.

While the officials celebrated the liberation of the region, military experts warned that Putin is likely repositioning his troops in order to surround Ukrainian forces defending the Donbas region from all sides.
