Ukraine’s capital Kyiv is expected to ‘fall by the weekend’ to Russian forces after the first day of conflict left around 100 people dead, US security officials fear.
Russian troops have already taken control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and will seize it within days to bring a ‘new Iron Curtain’ down on Europe, said Volodymyr Zelensky.
This sparks fears of a radiation leak that could result in fallout in Europe.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to encircle Ukrainian forces in the capital and force them to either be destroyed or surrender.
Speaking to Newsweek, a former senior intelligence officer said: “After the air and artillery end and the ground war really starts, I think Kyiv falls in just a few days.
“The military may last slightly longer but this isn’t going to last long.”
A source close to the government of Ukraine said they agreed that Kyiv will be surrounded but believed the government will not collapse.
In an attempt to prevent the capture of Kyiv, Emmanuel Macron spoke to Putin, who justified his reasons for war.
Zelensky has signed a decree ordering general mobilization of military, but men aged 18 to 60 are not allowed from leaving the country.
This comes after Russian forces seized control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Video showed Russian armored vehicles and tanks in front of the reactor, which is located only 60 miles north of Kyiv.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said it is observing the situation in Ukraine ‘with grave concern.’
Ukrainian presidential advisor Myhailo Podolyak also said: “After the absolutely senseless attack of the Russians in this direction, it is impossible to say that the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is safe.”
