A young Ukrainian soldier has been dubbed an avenger after shooting down six Russian jets using a portable missile launcher.
The 19-year-old member of the National Guard has gone viral after defyingly saying he will continue blasting invading Russian forces from the sky until his country’s victory.
Dubbed the ‘Zaporizhzhia Avenger’ after the south-eastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, the young man reportedly already shot six Russian jets out of the sky.
Military chiefs in a recent press release claimed that the teenager’s most recent victim was a Sukhoi Su-25 bomber, an $11 million twin-engine aircraft developed in the Soviet Union.
“The National Guard solider is protecting the Ukrainian sky in the Zaporizhzhia direction and mercilessly beats the enemy in the air with his faithful ‘girlfriend’ PZRK Igla,” the officials said as they revealed the soldier is using a Soviet-developed anti-aircraft missile launcher PZRK Igla 9K38 to defend his nation.point 559 | 1
Speaking out was also the brave young soldier who vowed to keep on fighting for as long as needed.
“I will destroy [Russian jets] for as long as necessary – until our victory,” he previously said in an interview with Ukrayinska Pravda after bringing down three Su-25 jets in just a matter of weeks.
Following his remarkable military achievements, the Avenger was awarded the title ‘Hero of Ukraine’, the highest national title that a Ukrainian civilian can receive.
The medal is reportedly awarded by the President of Ukraine himself, whereas only 648 such awards have been issued since the title was introduced back in 1998.
