A toddler died from a gunshot wound after finding his father’s loaded gun and shooting himself in the head.
Warren Bennett Oser, 2, died on October 15 after finding a loaded handgun in his father’s pickup truck outside his family’s home in Benson, North Carolina.
According to the prosecutors, the child managed to get inside his father’s parked vehicle because the door of the truck was open.
Once inside, he discovered a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson that was resting loaded in the front seat.
While playing with the handgun, the boy accidentally pulled the trigger and shot himself in the head.
Though the boy was immediately rushed to Johnson Medical Center Clayton, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead that same day.
As the police revealed, both of the child’s parents were at their home at the time of the shooting.
Johnston County District Attorney’s Office has since confirmed that the boy’s father, Tyler Oser, will be charged with failing to safely secure his firearm from his child.
“My heart goes out to the parents as they grieve the loss of their son,” DA Susan Doyle expressed.
“These tragedies are 100 percent preventable by safely storing all weapons away from minor children, as required by statute.
“This is not about the rightful ownership of guns. This is about the responsibility of gun owners to protect minors by ensuing weapons are kept safely away from children.”
Meanwhile, family members gathered at Warren’s home to pay the little boy a tribute and show support for his parents.
“We’re having to raise money for a funeral we never expected, for a 2-year-old,” one relative said in an interview with WRAL News.
The family has since the tragic incident reportedly already raised over $22,000 for the heartbroken family.
