An elementary school teacher was found dead alongside her two young children during a welfare check.
42-year-old Laura Moberley of South Carolina was a Carolina Forest Elementary School teacher who lived in her home together with children Emily, 8, and Eric, 11.
According to the preliminary reports, the bodies of the mother and her children were found in the family home on Thursday afternoon after a suspected murder-suicide.
Both the mother and her children succumbed to gunshot wounds.
“HCPD is saddened to acknowledge the death of two young children in a shooting incident yesterday in the Carolina Forest area,” the Horry County Police Department tweeted.
“Our community is hurting today, and that is undeniable. We ask that you be kind to one another—you may not know who has been impacted by this tragedy.”
The police department revealed that the investigation remains ongoing while reassuring the locals that there appears to be no immediate threat to the community.
Speaking out after the tragic incident was also the Horry County School District who shared their sympathy with the children’s family.
“We are at a loss for words after learning of the tragic incident that affected an entire family with ties to Horry County Schools,” their statement read.
“We lift our strongest prayers for the Moberley family and for everyone who knew them. We encourage our community to keep our students and staff in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
While an investigation into the suspected murder-suicide remains ongoing, one resident spoke out and admitted the shooting took the entire community by surprise.
“This comes as a shock, I think, to most of us that live here, that something like this could happen so close to home,” neighbor Richard Rizzo said in an interview with News13.
