Russia has confirmed that it is in talks with the US to have WNBA star Brittney Griner swapped with a notorious ‘Merchant of Death’ Russian arms dealer.
The news comes just one day after renowned WNBA superstar player Brittney Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison for smuggling cannabis into the country.
The sportswoman acknowledged her mistake but stated that the act was unintentional.
She was seen pleading for her innocence in front of the judge and jury while her punishment for the crime was being read out loud yesterday.
The deal for prisoner exchange has been a controversial matter for quite some time now but many felt that these were just speculations. But now, Russian reports have confirmed that the deal is well underway as the two countries are carrying out a discussion on the matter.
Russia has issued a stark warning to the US against discussing the matter openly in front of the media.
Meanwhile, US President Biden has long been calling the decision to deem the sportswoman guilty one that is not correct, while vowing to bring her back home so she can be with her wife.
He promised that she would be set free soon as she was innocent and for that, he was willing to do ‘anything’.
The deal put forward by the Biden administration will include a prisoner exchange, where notorious Russian arms dealer Vicktor Boult would be exchanged for Griner, sources added.
Biden failed in managing to secure the deal before the sentencing was handed over. But now, it seems the deal is up and running again after Russian news outlets broke out more details today.
