During the fashion segment, Williams discussed the outfit Smith wore to the Barbie premiere in London while seemingly forgetting that he identifies by they/them pronouns.

“Oh he’s dressed down,” she said as a picture showing the singer wearing loose jeans and an oversized sweater appeared on the big screen.

“It’s a bit big for him. If he was my son, I’d say, son, that was a bit big for you. He looks like the wee shrinking man, bless him.”

After Williams correctly addressed the singer by his chosen pronouns, Kelly once again misgendered Smith and referred to him as a fella.

“He’ll stand out. He knows what he’s doing does that fella,” she added.

The TV host’s comments have since sparked outrage on the internet where fans defended the iconic presenter while critics accused her of intentionally misgendering the non-binary performer.

“Not Lorraine misgendering Sam Smith over and over! She’s normally pretty good with this stuff. Vogue looked visibly uncomfortable!” someone said.

“I guess Lorraine didn’t get the memo about Sam Smith and their chosen pronouns, awkward,” another wrote.

A third fumed: “Sam Smith being one of the most well known non binary people. Lorraine using ‘he’, ‘his’, ‘son’, ‘man’, ‘fella’ – literally as many male pronouns as she could fit in a 2 min segment. She knew exactly what she was doing!”
