A Russian missile strike on an apartment building in Ukraine has left at least ten people dead and several injured.
As war rages on in heavily contested regions in Ukraine, cities and the civilians in them are not being spared from constant bombardment and unexpected Russian airstrikes.
On Friday morning, a Russian missile reportedly struck an occupied apartment building in Odessa, a port city that lies in the south of the country.
According to the local authorities, at least ten people were killed in the missile strike. Several – including three children – sustained serious injuries in the blast.
“The number of dead in the apartment building missile strike has risen to 10,” Sergei Bratchuk, a spokesman for the city’s military administration, confirmed.
The official went on to claim that the Russian missile was launched from an aircraft above the Black Sea.
“One missile hit a nine-story residential building,” the Ukrainian army said.
“In an apartment building, nine floors of one section are completely destroyed… rescuers have already provided medical care to seven wounded, including three children.”
The army also revealed that another missile struck a recreation center in the city. It is not clear how many, if any, people died in the other strike.
The tragic news comes just a day after another Russian missile destroyed a residential building in the city of Mykolaiv.
At least seven people died in the blast, the authorities reported as shocking footage showing the moment the missile struck the building emerged.
Dismissing Ukraine’s allegations of Russian missile strikes on civilians was no other than Russian President Vladimir Putin who said: “Our army does not attack any civilian infrastructure site. We have every capability of knowing what is situated where.”
