A Sky News reporter was shot in the back by Russian troops after they deliberately opened fire on his team.
Stuart Ramsay, a Sky News chief correspondent, was shot in the lower back on Monday while he and his team were driving through Kyiv to document the devastation in the embattled capital.
While driving around in the car, the crew was reportedly set upon by a Russian “assassination squad” that deliberately started shooting at them.
In shocking footage taken by Sky News, the crew could be heard screaming after Russian troops, whom they initially mistook for Ukrainian forces, began firing at their car.
After the vehicle was riddled with dozens of bullets, the crew started yelling “we’re journalists” in hopes of ending the gunfire. A few seconds later, however, the troops continued firing at the car.
During the altercation, Ramsay was shot in the lower back. Meanwhile, camera operator Richie Mockler was shot two times in his body armor.
Eventually, the crew managed to escape gunfire by running down a nearby embankment. Shortly after, the team was picked up and taken to safety by the Ukrainian police.
Since the shocking encounter, all of the British members of the crew have returned to the UK. Their fifth member, a Ukrainian producer, has since also been reunited with his family.
“The first round cracked the windscreen. Then we were under full attack. Bullets cascaded through the whole of the car,” Ramsay said as he recalled his near-death experience.
“The steering wheel and dashboard had disintegrated. I do recall wondering if my death was going to be painful.”
