Kelly’s defense team has reportedly sued the Brooklyn prison he was sent to just two days after his sentencing.
On Wednesday, the disgraced R&B singer was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after being found guilty of s*x trafficking charges.
As Judge Ann M. Donnelly told the defendant, he forced his victims, including fans who were minors, into believing that “love is enslavement and violence.”
Following his sentencing, Kelly was incarcerated at MDC Brooklyn where he was reportedly immediately placed on suicide watch.
Blasting the prison’s decision to put the musician under strict watch were Kelly’s lawyers who have since sued the prison claiming the 55-year-old is “in fine spirits.”
“R. Kelly is not suicidal. He was in fine spirits after his sentencing hearing and ready to fight this appeal,” Attorney Jennifer Bonjean wrote on Twitter.
“Placing him on suicide watch was punitive conduct by the @BureauOfPrisons.”
Bonjean later also spoke to Fox News to suggest that the Brooklyn prison in question is being run like a gulag and that her client’s rights were violated.
“Mr. Kelly was placed on suicide watch for purely punitive reasons in violation of his Eighth Amendment rights,” she insisted.
“MDC has a policy of placing high profile individuals under the harsh conditions of suicide watch whether they are suicidal or not. MDC Brooklyn is being run like a gulag.”
The suit follows just two days after the former R&B star was sentenced to 30 years in prison over a scheme of abuse that lasted for more than two decades.
According to the reports, R. Kelly is already planning to appeal the ruling.
