President Biden and the first lady visited Uvalde to pay their respects to the victims of the Texas elementary school shooting and meet with their families.
On Sunday, Joe and Jill Biden faced the difficult task of talking to the mourning parents of 19 children and the families of 2 teachers who were killed last Tuesday after 18-year-old Salvador Ramos opened fire at Robb Elementary School.
At around 11.15 am local time, the first couple arrived at the memorial which was set up in the honor of slain children and teachers outside the Uvalde elementary school.
There, the Bidens stood quietly and prayed after laying a bouquet of white roses at the memorial. The President could be seen making a cross sign and wiping away his tears while paying his respects.
After speaking with local officials and the principal of the school, the couple moved to pay respects to each of the victims individually by touching cardboard cutouts with the children’s pictures superimposed on them.
Joe and Jill also attended the mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where grieving families of killed students and teachers listened to Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller who urged people to respond to the massacre with “hope and healing.”
While the President didn’t release a public statement during his trip to Uvalde, he responded with a simple “we will” after the crowd that gathered outside the church demanded we “do something” about the mass killings.
In the afternoon, the first couple went on to meet with the victims’ families and first responders at Uvalde County Arena. The meetings were conducted privately.
Following the meetings, the first couple returned to their Delaware home.
The trip to Uvalde comes days after President Biden addressed the nation and called for gun reform while vowing to stand up to the gun lobby.
