A young pregnant woman was shot dead while attempting to rob the occupants of a car in Chicago, Illinois.
21-year-old Genesis Escobar was reportedly killed after forcing her way inside a car in the neighborhood of Belmont Cragin with the intention of robbing the people inside.
Amid the escalation, gunfire erupted both within and outside the car, and Escobar was shot multiple times.
After the brutal altercation, the robbery suspect’s body was dumped at a nearby intersection and covered in cash.
Escobar’s friends have since spoken out and claimed that the young woman was 7 months pregnant and looking forward to becoming a mother.
“She texted my daughter and told my daughter: ‘Please help me! I’m in trouble!’ But my daughter was sleeping,” Iris Alvarez, a local whose daughter was friends with Escobar, said as she recalled the 21-year-old’s plea for help moments before the shooting.
As of this writing, it remains unclear what kind of trouble Escobar was referring to in her final text.
Meanwhile, the police confirmed that the woman was shot in the hand, shoulder, and back while she was inside the vehicle.
Investigators also revealed that witnesses alleged Escobar was with a group of people during the attempted robbery. The people who were with Escobar exchanged fire after the people inside the car started shooting.
Both the people who were in the car as well as those who were presumably working with Escobar have fled the scene and remain unidentified.
“They threw a bunch of money on top of her. I don’t know if she was into some kind of trouble,” Alvarez added.
“I don’t care how much trouble you’re in. I feel that for a person to do that to someone, doesn’t have a heart.”
