A young police officer was shot dead while responding to a report of a domestic disturbance in South Carolina.
28-year-old Roy Andrew ‘Drew’ Barr was a dedicated young cop who was dispatched to a Cayce home after a domestic disturbance report just before 3 am on Sunday.
According to the reports, Barr and two other cops came across a man who was in the front yard when they arrived at the scene.
After the initial contact with the man, several shots were fired from inside the house. One of the bullets hit and killed the young officer.
Following the shooting, the police spent several hours trying to get the 36-year-old suspect, Austin Henderson, to walk out of the house and surrender. After seven hours of talks, the suspect pointed the gun to himself and took his own life.
As of this writing, it is not clear whether the suspect walked back into his home before opening fire on the police officers. It is also not clear whether they shot back at the suspect or not.
“There was no call for it, there was no reason for it. It was inexcusable,” Cayce Police Chief Chris Cowan said, WLTX reported.
In a Sunday press conference, he added that the suspect took his own life after seven hours of negotiations.
Officer Barr was an EMT, a firefighter, and a dedicated young cop who joined Cayce Police Department in 2016. In 2017, the officer was shot while pursuing a man in a stolen vehicle. In 2020, Barr was promoted to the K-9 unit.
“He loved his dog Molly and he loved his job. He was good at, not only interacting with children, the community, but also his officers, his peers as well as the citizens of this great city,” Cowan expressed.
