Following a thorough investigation, it has been confirmed that the woman was dead in her home for at least two years.

While her cause of death remains unclear, Marinella’s “mummified” remains suggest that she died in late 2019.

As of this writing, the police are still looking for the woman’s relatives. Meanwhile, her neighbors told the authorities that they assumed she had moved away after they stopped seeing her outside her home.

Following the horrific discovery, Mario Landriscina, the mayor of Como, confirmed that the city would be paying for and arranging the elderly woman’s funeral.

He also urged the local residents to attend the funeral and give the woman the sendoff she deserves.

“I will try to be there and I invite the city to be present. This is the moment to be together, and even if this woman had no relatives, we could become her relatives,” Landriscina said.

Meanwhile, Elena Bonetti, the country’s Minister for Family and Equal Opportunities, spoke out and urged people to stick together and take care of each other.

“What happened to Mrs. Marinella Beretta in Como, the forgotten loneliness, hurts consciences. Remembering their life is the duty of a community that wants to stick together,” Bonetti said.

“We need to not limit our horizons to the private and go back to healing the ties between ourselves. Taking care of each other is the experience of families, institutions, and our citizens: no one has to be left alone.”
