More than forty people were found dead inside a semitrailer in Texas.
On Monday, at least 40 bodies of migrants were discovered in a semitrailer in South Texas after a presumed smuggling attempt had gone horribly wrong.
According to the early reports, an additional 16 people were rushed to the hospitals in San Antonio for treatment.
It is believed that migrants involved in the incident – which represents one of the deadliest human smuggling events in the country’s history – succumbed to Texas’ unforgiving heat and died from heat stroke or suffocation in the truck during transport.
Though the weather in the region appeared to be mostly cloudy on Monday, the temperature soared up to 100°F according to weather reports.
Following the horrifying discovery, first responders blocked off the road and rushed surviving victims to the hospital to be treated for exhaustion and heat stroke. Meanwhile, an investigation into the smuggling attempt was launched.
As of this writing, three individuals have been arrested over the incident. The authorities also reported that four children were among the rescued migrants.
While the victims’ nationality has yet to be officially confirmed, Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard confirmed that the local consulate was already on the way to the scene as he called the deaths a “tragedy in Texas.”
The smuggling attempt comes after a record number of illegal crossings was noted at the US-Mexico border and amid rising criticism of President Joe Biden and his ‘lenient’ immigration policies.
