An Olympic gold medalist has joined the war in Ukraine and issued a warning to invading Russian troops.
22-year-old Kristina Dmitrenko is a professional shooter and Ukrainian sports star who won the gold medal at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games biathlon competition.
Now, the young lady has joined the ranks of the Ukrainian National Guard to fight for her country and protect its independence.
“I never thought in my life it would be like this. No one can imagine this,” the athlete said.
In a warning to Russian troops, she added: “I shoot well, so the invaders won’t have a chance.
“Even if I temporarily replace my biathlon rifle with a machine gun, whatever weapon is in my hands, I will stand to the end. Victory will surely be ours.”
According to the reports, Dmitrenko was staying at a training camp in the Carpathians and getting ready for an international competition when Putin’s invasion of Ukraine began.
Though she was looking forward to the sports event, Dmitrenko’s love for her country prevailed and she decided to put her training on hold and put her life at huge risk instead.
“Friends from Chernihiv and Kyiv sent pictures of the horror they had to endure, but I have no fear of the enemy,” she defiantly said.
The professional shooter is one of many fighters who volunteered to join Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
Among those enlisted in Ukraine’s armed forces are also countless foreigners from various countries – including the US, the UK, Canada, and more – who left their homes and families behind to help the people of Ukraine.
