A mother has broken into tears while recalling the time she turned in her son to the police after seeing his grisly diary notes.
41-year-old Nicole Schubert’s son was just 17 years old when his mother found his diary and discovered chilling mass shooting plans back in 2019.
As the mother revealed, her son’s diary included meticulous plans to commit a mass shooting at his high school in Washington on the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. In his evil plans, the teenager also plotted to kill his own mother before opening fire at the high school.
“Kill everyone possible, fight to the death or kill self after maximum damage has occurred,” the boy wrote in his diary according to a police report.
After seeing the plans with her own eyes, Schubert made the difficult decision to turn her own son into police to save the lives of innocent students as well as the life of her son.
“As hard as it was to turn him in, I don’t have any regrets,” the mom said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
Recalling the ordeal during her appearance on Good Morning America, Schubert admitted she felt “devastated” when she found out her own son planned to kill her and his fellow students.
“It was very descriptive. It was just heartbreaking and I didn’t really want to know the details,” she said.
“That’s my child. I gave birth to him. It hurts a lot, it still hurts. He says it was just a story but I don’t know…”
Speaking of her decision to act immediately, she added: “Your first instinct is, as a parent, is to protect your child. But at that point, I felt like if he is actually going to do these things, he would be safer in jail.
“It wasn’t just about me and him at that point. It was about a whole school – hundreds of people, hundreds of kids, children.”
According to Schubert, she has no regrets about making the decision to turn her son in. While she admitted that her son is still upset with her, she insists that he has since turned his life around and plans on going to college.
The devastated mother also urged parents to “stay in your kids’ business” even if their children don’t like it.
“Just be aware and watch for signs. Kids will normally tell you by their actions when something is wrong,” she added before saying parents are also responsible for their kids’ actions to a certain point.
