A mother has been dubbed a hero after saving her young daughter’s life by pushing her out of the way of an oncoming car.
29-year-old Chelsea Ferguson from Queensland, Australia, was walking with her four children at a supermarket parking lot in Westport, New Zealand, when an elderly driver in a car plowed into the family.
Instinctively, the young mom pushed her 4-year-old daughter Pippa out of the vehicle’s way while failing to move herself out of harm’s way.
“They came on holiday to New Zealand because our other sister was due to have a baby, so she came over to be part of her birth,” Chelsea’s sister, Jessica Irons, explained in an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
“She was walking out of the supermarket and back to the car when she heard the screech of [a car] accelerating and instinctively threw her daughter out of the way, saving her life.”
As the sibling added, Chelsea doesn’t remember anything after the crash. She also credited her sister for saving Pippa’s life.
“She absolutely saved her life. Her motherly instincts kicked in and the next thing she knows she is waking up in Nelson Hospital,” Jessica continued.
In the collision, the mother-of-four suffered multiple injuries including a broken shin and fractured femur, leaving her at risk of losing her leg entirely.
Chelsea also had to undergo five major surgeries.
“She is just so beautiful and would give anything to anyone. She has just been a surrogate for two guys from NSW and gave them a baby boy,” her sister added.
“Just goes out of her way to make sure she gives her kids anything they ever need, she is just so so strong.”
The family has since also launched a fundraiser to help Chelsea and her husband overcome financial issues arising from the accident.
