31-year-old Sophie Nash and 30-year-old Daniel Nolan were found guilty of allowing or causing the death of their child, Ava Grace Nolan.

The monster couple were sentenced to a total of 18 years behind bars at Preston Crown Court where jurors heard how the newborn had suffered at the hands of her parents.

But only one week later, police were called to a home on Lancashire after receiving reports of an unresponsive child.

The baby was rushed to Royal Blackburn Hospital where she died after midnight. A post-mortem then revealed that she had sustained a catastrophic head injury which was likely caused by forceful shaking.

But the head injury was not the only abuse the little girl suffered in her very short life. According to reports, Ava had a broken femur and a separate head injury. The parents were ‘abusive’ and ‘volatile’ and consumed with their own destructive relationship.

Det. Ch. Insp. Jill Johnson from Lancashire Police said after the sentencing: “I am pleased that Nolan and Nash have both been jailed, particularly as both have continued to blame each other and neither has ever accepted any responsibility for the acts of violence that led to baby Ava’s death.

“Ultimately their selfish preoccupation with themselves, combined with their toxic and volatile relationship, has resulted in their baby losing her life.”

Johnson continued: “I would again like to thank all of the officers and staff who worked on this incredibly complex and emotive case, always with the aim of getting justice for baby Ava, as well as the witnesses who gave evidence and supported this investigation.

“We will continue to work hard with our partners to protect children like baby Ava from harm, to educate and support parents, but ultimately to protect and safeguard children, to be their voice and to prevent tragic cases such as this.”
