A mother and her four children who were killed in a horror Illinois highway crash have been identified and pictured.
On Sunday morning, seven people died some 50 miles from Chicago in McHenry County, Illinois, after a head-on collision on Interstate 90.
According to the reports, the crash took place at around 2:11 am after a car heading in the wrong direction plowed into the van of parents Thomas and Lauren Dobosz.
Lauren and all of her four children died after the two vehicles involved in the collision burst into flames. Another child, who was not Lauren’s, also died in the collision.
Thomas was the sole survivor of the crash and is currently fighting for his life in the hospital.
It has since come to light that Lauren and Thomas were parents to four young children aged from 5 to 13 years old.
Meanwhile, the driver of the car heading the wrong way on Interstate 90 has also been identified.
As the investigation continues, the detectives have yet to figure out why 22-year-old Jennifer Fernandez, who was driving a 2010 Acura TSX, took the wrong way on the highway and caused an accident.
“It headed straight for me as I was in the middle lane, and luckily I was able to swerve out of the way before it hit me. The cars behind me also veered out of the way just in time,” Alan Wiedmeyer, a witness who allegedly encountered Jennifer’s car on the interstate, recalled in an interview with DailyMail.com.
He added: “My heart just sunk especially finding out that five kids had lost their lives.
“I felt guilt too that I could have stopped it and hit the other vehicle before it got to them. I have a two-year-old of my own, and I couldn’t imagine losing a child in such a horrific accident.”
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
