A grieving mother was forced to bury her young child after he died in a Russian artillery strike in Ukraine.
6-year-old Oleg Kornievski was playing outside his home in Lysychansk, eastern Ukraine, when shrapnel from a Russian artillery strike struck and fatally wounded him.
On the following day, the boy’s heartbroken mom, Ekaterina, broke into tears as she was forced to lay her son to rest.
The grieving mother has since also shared the 6-year-old’s last photo in which he is seen smiling while holding a bouquet of flowers just hours before the shelling.
According to the reports, Oleg was one of three victims who died when the Russians shelled the city on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Luhansk region head Serhiy Haidai confirmed that recent attacks on the city also resulted in damage to a local shopping center, a mine, and several homes. A nursery school in the nearby city of Hirske was allegedly also targeted.
Haidai also claimed that a Thursday airstrike on a Lysychansk building sheltering civilians resulted in at least four fatalities and seven wounded.
A separate airstrike allegedly targeted the city’s sanatorium. Since the building collapsed, the authorities expect additional casualties.
“It is likely that there are people trapped under the rubble,” Haidai said as he confirmed that the rescue mission has already begun.
As per United Nations’ estimations updated on 14 June 2022, some 280 Ukrainian children and more than 4,100 adults died since the beginning of Putin’s invasion.
An additional 5,500 Ukrainians are believed to have been injured in the war.
