A gang of monkeys broke into a family property and snatched a 1-month-old baby while he was being breastfed by his mother.
The shocking incident takes place in Mwamgongo, Tanzania, where mother Shayima was reportedly breastfeeding her young baby boy, Luhaiba Said, when a troop of monkeys descended on her home.
According to Tanzania’s The Citizen, one of the monkeys then snatched little Luhaiba from his mother’s arms.
Desperate to save her son, the woman began screaming for help to catch the attention of villagers who rushed to her aid.
After the villagers began using forces in an attempt to free the newborn, the monkey retaliated by inflicting fatal injuries to the baby boy.
“She screamed for help and villagers rushed to her house to assist her in getting her child – identified as Luhaiba Said – back from the troop of monkeys,” Regional Commander James Manyama explained.
“When they tried to take him back by force he got injured on the head and the neck.”
The authorities have since urged the locals to watch out for dangerous monkeys who might turn aggressive at any moment.
While incidents involving wild monkeys invading people’s homes are not unusual, Commander Manyama did note that the village where the killing occurred is in the proximity of Gombe National Park.
“It should be noted that Mwamgongo village shares a border with Gombe National Park,” he added.
“Incidents of animals invading villages are not uncommon.”
