Meghan Markle has made a surprise visit to Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and 2 teachers were killed by an 18-year-old gunman.
Following the mass shooting and the death of 21 people at Robb Elementary School, a memorial honoring the dead has been set up outside Uvalde County Courthouse.
Hundreds of people from across the state and further have since visited the small city and the memorial to pay their respects to the victims of one of the deadliest school shootings in US history.
Among them was also the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, who reportedly “did not want anybody to know who she was” during her trip.
Meghan, who didn’t talk to the press during her trip, wore simple jeans, a t-shirt, and a baseball hat as she laid a bouquet of white roses at the memorial.
In contrast with her simple clothes, the Duchess donned a $23,000 Cartier Tank watch and a $6,900 Cartier Love Bracelet.
The Duchess reportedly also stopped at a local blood drive where she anonymously donated food according to a volunteer who worked at the community center.
“I had no idea who she was. She just was carrying on a conversation like her and I knew each other for years,” Gloria Contreras, a volunteer who encountered Meghan at Herby Ham Activity Center, told BuzzFeed.
“We were just talking about, you know, the situation and what happened what we were doing here. I told her about us giving out water to the people and feeding them.”
She added: “I even talked about my personal life, telling her about my son and my family and, you know, coming to Texas because she told me she was from Santa Barbara and I said, ‘Well, you need to come to Texas!’
“We were talking about Texas and Uvalde and how it is to be in a small town and how everybody is so kind and warm-hearted and know we know each other and stuff and how the faith is deep-rooted.”
Meghan’s visit to Uvalde comes as her own father, 77-year-old Thomas Markle, remains hospitalized after suffering a suspected stroke.
Thomas was reportedly picked up by an ambulance in Tijuana, Mexico, on Monday evening after suffering a stroke that left him unable to speak.
The 77-year-old was then rushed to a hospital in Chula Vista, California. As of this writing, it is not clear if Meghan intends to visit her estranged father with whom she cut all ties after her royal wedding or not.
“My father is recovering in [the] hospital. We ask for privacy for the family, for his health and wellbeing. He just needs peace and rest,” Samantha Markle, Meghan’s half-sister, told Daily Mail.
“It’s a travesty how much he’s been tortured and how much he’s had to go through thanks to my sister’s disregard the past few years. That is unforgivable.”
