Community government leaders ask their homeless citizens to get off the streets for their safety against the cold-blooded killer.
Police officials said that a massive search is underway for a deranged killer responsible for murdering two homeless men and wounding three others in a series of senseless shootings in Washington, DC, and New York City this month.
The NYPD and Washington, DC’s Metro Police Department released a joint statement announcing a lone gunman wanted for sneaking up on sleeping vagrants and shooting them, including the two men who were attacked early Saturday morning in Soho.
The news stating that a serial shooter was on the loose came shortly after a third homeless man was found dead in Manhattan, police are investigating if that man’s death is connected to the others, sources said.
The vagrant was found with an apparent pelvis wound on the sidewalk on Sunday night. Authorities said the first three confirmed attacks by the crazed gunman took place in the nation’s capital.
On March 3, the suspect shot and wounded a male victim on the 1100 block of New York Avenue. Five days later, the gunman shot another man on the 1700 block of H Street.
The first two victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said that the suspect’s attacks turned deadly last Wednesday when he allegedly fatally stabbed and shot a homeless man whose remains were discovered after an encampment fire on the 400 block of New York Avenue.
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City encourages DC’s homeless citizens to seek shelter as a cold-blooded killer who had shot five vagrants remain on the loose.
The killer is suspected of targeting sleeping homeless men in a series of shootings in DC and in the Big Apple this month that left 2 dead persons and three highly severely wounded.
Mayor Adams and Mayor Bowser already said that they were coordinating with federal authorities to investigate the said crime before he strikes again. Both Mayors urgently get the individuals out of the streets before the unknown suspect murder another citizen again.
The mayor’s jointly proclaimed statement says: “As our law enforcement agencies work quickly with federal partners to locate the suspect, we are also calling on unsheltered residents to seek shelter.”
“Again, it is heartbreaking and tragic to know that in addition to all the dangers that unsheltered residents face, we now have a cold-blooded killer on the loose, but we are certain that we will get the suspect off the street and into police custody,” they added.
Another homeless man was found dead in a sleeping bag in Tribeca, but authorities haven’t confirmed if his death was related to the serial shooter. No ballistics were found at the scene and there were no discernible entry marks through the man’s clothing, sources said.
The NYPD issued new patrol guidance amid the terrifying incidents, an internal memo showed. All officers were directed to proactively engage with apparently homeless individuals, conduct wellness checks, and offer shelter services.
The guidance said that cops should also tell vulnerable people about the brutal attacks and show them wanted posters of the suspected gunman.
