A young Marine was killed while helping a stranded couple after they had crashed on the highway.
The incident took place in Oceanside, California, where two motorists lost control of their SUV and crashed on Interstate 5 on early Monday morning.
After seeing the stranded pair in need of help, a 20-year-old unnamed Marine who was stationed at Camp Pendleton stopped at the side of the road to assist them and help them secure the crash site.
While tending to the couple, whose vehicle was allegedly barely visible in the darkness of the early morning, the young Marine was struck by a passing box truck.
It has since come to light that the 20-year-old died at the scene.
“He was trying to do the right thing, he was trying to help somebody in need. Unfortunately, the freeway traffic was still moving at the time and the box van came and collided into the vehicle,” a California Highway Patrol spokesperson told CBS 8.
Following the accident, it was revealed that the driver of the truck was not driving under influence and has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
The police, however, arrested the SUV’s driver, 36-year-old Darryl Sheffey, on suspicion of DUI and unnamed felony charges. As of this writing, the identity of the man’s female companion remains undisclosed.
According to the reports, the woman who was with Sheffey during the crash sustained serious injuries and is currently being treated at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.
“Our deepest condolences are with the Marine’s family, friends and unit service members,” Camp Pendleton said in a statement following the Marine’s passing.
