A young man was mauled by a shark while surfing at a popular beach.
The horrific shark attack took place at Lucy’s Beach in Western Australia where Max Marsden was surfing together with another friend on Sunday morning.
At around 7.35 am, the competitive surfer was attacked by what is believed to be a 5-foot copper shark, a large and powerful shark species that is normally not aggressive towards humans though a considerable number of non-fatal attacks has been recorded in the last few years.
According to the reports, the shark in question latched onto Max’s arm as it attempted to pull the man underneath the surface of the water.
After the attack, the surfer’s friend, who was watching the attack unfold from the shoreline, pulled the young man to safety and performed first aid.
Marsden was later rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery for his arm injuries. He is now believed to be in stable condition and is expected to survive the ordeal.
“He was duly stabilized by his friend immediately on the shore, which is just fantastic to hear,” Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said as he praised the surfer’s friend for having first aid knowledge.
“First aid is a critical skill everyone should learn, particularly when you’re going surfing in remote places.”
The latest reports suggest that Marsden has already been discharged from the hospital to continue his recovery at home.
After the attack, Lucy’s Beach was closed by the authorities indefinitely. While the site is known for its hard-to-pass terrain and dangerous rips, it remains a popular destination for surfers looking to unwind and practice their skills away from more crowded alternatives.
