“He was diving when the animal attacked him, ripping off his head and biting both shoulders,” José Bernal, one of the witnesses of the deadly Paredón Colorado shark attack, recalled in an interview with Tracking Sharks.

“Local divers had been warned about the presence of sharks in the area and most had not been out for several days.”

According to the reports, López was diving in the area to collect mollusks despite warnings of predators lurking around in that part of the sea.

Concerned by his financial situation and motivated by the opportunity of making a living by hunting seafood during a regional shortage, López hopped into the shark-infested waters without an oxygen tank and dove as deep as several dozen feet in his search for mollusks.

Making them a perfect sea world predator, these sharks can swim at up to 37 mph and may detect their prey from miles away due to their incredible sense of smell.
